Variations in soil types within the National Natural Park “Russian North”, European Russia, were analyzed to secure habitat diversity. Forest soils differed greatly in O and A layer thickness, organic C content, total elements, acidity, and exchangeable cations. Improving of soil properties in a range: podzol, podzolic soil, dernopodzolic soil, brown earth, pararendzina lead to growing diversity and changes in floristical composition of phytocoenoses, followed by changing pine and spruce forests to mixed and birch forests. The ordination of the major species diversity variables was highly related to soil pH and thickness of A horizon, suggesting that pH and organic matter content are the best soil related predictors of species diversity parameters. Evidence from the relationships between soil and plant species diversity suggests that soil quality management could be used to maintain compositional stability at forest ecosystems.

Plant Diversity and Richness in Relation to Environmental Gradient in Zagros Ecosystems, West of Iran

Plant diversityis essential to maintain the health of planet's ecosystems. Conservation of biodiversity is necessary for the ecological stability and productivity in natural ecosystems. The aim of this research was to study the biodiversity and richness of plant species (including trees, shrubs and grasses) related to the environmental factors (soil and physiography) in the forests of Zagros, w...

Conservation Ecology: Variability in fire frequency and forest composition i...'s southeastern boreal forest: a challenge for sustainable forest management

Because some consequences of fire resemble the effects of industrial forest harvesting, forest management is often considered as a disturbance having effects similar to those of natural disturbances. The implications of microbial and substrate limitation for the fates of carbon in different organic soil horizon types of boreal forest ecosystems: a mechanistically based model analysis

The large amount of soil carbon in boreal forest ecosystems has the potential to influence the climate system if released in large quantities in response to warming. Thus, there is a need to better understand and represent the environmental sensitivity of soil carbon decomposition. Most soil carbon decomposition models rely on empirical relationships omitting key biogeochemical mechanisms and t...

Cost-efficient Conservation Strategies for Boreal Forest Biodiversity

Perhans, K. 2008. Cost-efficient conservation strategies for boreal forest biodiversity. Doctor’s dissertation. ISSN 1652-6880, ISBN 978-91-85913-72-5 Long and intensive forest management has made conservation measures in the forest landscape necessary to maintain forest biodiversity. The most common measure is to set aside land for conservation purposes. This, however, requires large financial...

Spatial Analysis of Central Zagros Forest Fragmentations for Conservation and Restoration Purposes (A Case Study: Posht kuh Forests, Fereydoonshahr, Isfahan Province)

In the current study, conservation strategies were employed for the spatial analysis of forest fragmentation and field assessment approaches in a forest landscape of Central Zagros, in the western part of Isfahan province, Iran. Vegetation and soil properties were accordingly studied in 15 forest sites with various densities including dense, semi-sparse and sparse-forests with 839.2 km2. In the...
